The book opens in a dimly lit lounge in Islamabad, where a father tunes a battered radio to the BBC World Service and weeps at news of Bosnia. His son watches, without yet having the language for what he is witnessing.
From there it travels — through grandparents’ stories of the 1947 Partition, a career that came to feel hollow, the catastrophe in Gaza, and journeys to Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia and Bosnia — following how inherited borders shape who we grieve for, who we help, and who we believe we belong to.
Along the way it tells the origins of Amal and Volunteers for Palestine, and of the people met in Srebrenica, Mostar and beyond. It closes with field notes: twelve practices in four movements for building a borderless community.
I did not have the language for what I was witnessing. I only knew that a man in Islamabad could somehow carry the weight of a tragedy unfolding thousands of miles away.
Borders began to look less like permanent features of human life and more like inherited ideas — ideas capable of producing statelessness, displacement, and generations of alienation.
